Even during the current school quite a big proportion of theoretical works is based upon the variational approach. It is very easy to understand why this approach is so attractive:

Bright Spatial Soliton Interactions,known that self-trapping leading to spatial solitons can exist by virtue of many different physical mechanisms. These solitons have many properties in common. The question addressed in this chapter is the universality of the interactions between solitons based on widely diverse physical origins for the self-trapping [2].
