描述Pulsed power technology, in the simplest of terms, usually concerns the storage of electrical energy over relatively long times and then its rapid release over a comparatively short period. However, if we leave the definition at that, we miss a multitude of aspects that are important in the ultimate application of pulsed power. It is, in fact, the application of pulsed power technology to which this series of texts will be foc~sed. Pulsed power in today‘s broader sense means "special power" as opposed to the traditional situation of high voltage impulse issues related to the utility industry. Since the pulsed power field is primarily application driven it has principally engineering flavor. Today‘s applications span those from materials processing, such as metal forming by pulsed magnetic fields, to commercial applications, such as psychedelic strobe lights or radar modulators. Very high peak power applica- tions occur in research for inertial confinement fusion and the Strategic Defense Initiative and other historical defense uses. Low-Pressure Plasma Opening Switches,times are generally long: ? 10 .s. Ideally, a plasma switch is desired which can perform both closing and opening functions at high speed and high repetition rates under low-power control, like a hard-vacuum tube, but without the large forward-voltage drop and low thermionic-cathode current restrictions which are associated with hard tubes.

The Reflex Switch: A Fast-Opening Vacuum Switch, vacuum device, called the “reflex switch”, is described herein. It is used to energize inductive stores with charging times of both tens and hundreds of nanoseconds. At opening, the stored magnetic energy is discharged on time scales compressed typically to 1/3 – 1/6 of the charging duration.

Dielectric Breakdown in Solids,d less emphasis will be placed on long-term degradation under high electric stress which is of more direct interest in electrical power industry. Nonetheless, the background discussion will be cast in fairly general terms, since the same principles apply to all types of breakdown once it ensues.
