Pyramidal and Polygonal Neurons and Neuropil of Layers IVd/Va and Vb,Real pyramidal cells reappear, with particularly small ones predominating (Fig. 27). A few medium-sized and small polygonal neurons are still present. In addition to these types of nerve cells, the broad, cell-sparse layer Vb contains Meynert pyramidal cells, the largest neurons of the striate area.

General Remarks Concerning Pyramidal and Nonpyramidal or Stellate Cells,Ramón y Cajal (1909–1911) describes two basic classes of Golgi-impregnated neurons in the isocortex: the pyramidal and the nonpyramidal neurons. Only the pyramidal cells reveal peculiarities which are characteristic of a defined layer, whereas nonpyramidal cells seem to lack them; at least we do not know of any at present.
