Since the late 1970s, however, funding for BGS scientific drilling purposes, never great, has ceased entirely, although the British Department of Energy has funded several deep research wells since that date.

The United States Continental Scientific Drilling Program has had more than the normal number of parents, all of whom retain an interest in its growth and well being, and with whose guidance and support it seems to be developing well.
