Cracks under stationary conditions,ion is confined to a small region surrounding the crack tip. Influences of material nonlinearity becomes significant if the material fails in a ductile fracture process or the plastic zone surrounding the tip is not well contained by the elastic zone described by the known Williams’ solutions [147, 148].

Mixed mode crack propagation, crack tip field is under the combined mode I and III loading conditions. After a short transition phase, crack growth become steady. Such fracture processes are often observed in thick specimens, where the out-of-plane shear stresses effect cracking.
