Nuclear Fuel Cycle Options,After unloading from the reactor core, spent fuel contains a mixture of U-238 and unused U-235, newly generated plutonium, higher actinides and fission products. U-235 and plutonium are valuable materials, which can be used again for energy generation, whereas fission products are waste materials, the “nuclear ashes” from “burning” uranium.
