Nonlinearity in optical fibre communications,elopment of new nonlinear materials—low-dimensional semiconductor structures, organic polymers, photorefractive materials, and many others—as discussed elsewhere in this book. However, it was also discovered that the optical fibres development for optical communication can themselves exhibit nonlinear properties.

Ultrashort pulses for nonlinear optical techniques, necessary, laser amplifier schemes can be employed such that optical gains of 10.–10. are readily achieved. The nonlinear processes induced at the high peak power levels are relevant to various aspects of pulse generation, manipulation, characterization and to time-domain spectroscopic studies.

The Photorefractive Effect,d system, incorporating optically nonlinear devices, that was not largely photorefractive in nature. Optical systems that have been demonstrated with photorefractive materials include implementations of associative memories, reconfigurable optical interconnections and even the optical implementations of neural-type processing architectures.
