描述Nonlinear optical phenomena can be exploited in advanceddevices for transport, processing, and storage of information. Theseare needed as the present-day approach - mainly using onelectron-based technology - faces the challenges of increasingdemand on bandwidth and processing speed. A key role in thedevelopment of nonlinear devices is the availability of novelmaterials with the required nonlinear optical properties. With suchmaterials, scientific creativity and careful design, promisingconcepts have been developed resulting in the demonstration ofdevices. .This book contains the proceedings of NOIS 2000 (Nonlinear Optics forthe Information Society) Annual Meeting of the COST Action P2, held atthe University of Twente, in Enschede, The Netherlands, on26-27 October, 2000. It comprises a selection of thepresentations at the meeting, reporting state-of-the-art research anddevelopments in the field of applications of nonlinear phenomena ininformation technology.

Silicon Microphotonicspassive and active integrated optical components such as e.g. waveguides and optical amplifiers. Second the semiconducting properties of silicon itself can be exploited to fabricate novel optoelectronic devices. In this talk, three new concepts based in Si microphotonic technology will be adressed.

Optical Data Storage Using Microholographic Gratingsonal bit-oriented storage into the third dimension. Pits are replaced by reflection volume gratings created within a sub-micrometer range using highly focused laser beams. This article summarizes the main features of this storage method including system design and development, data coding and processing scheme as well as material testing.

Rewritable Optical Storage by Polarization Holographyn of reflected transmission polarisation holography for storing digital information is presented. Improved holographic system capable of achieving data density of 1 bit/μm. is under development. Hologram size of 0.06 mm. is achieved with a custom designed Fourier-objective.

Nonlinear Magneto-Optical Probing of Ultrathin Magnetic Layer Interfaces: CoNi/Pt and Co/Cuf ultrathin magnetic multilayers [1] due to its extreme interface sensitivity with very large magneto-optical effects. We have used MSHG in combination with XRD, AFM, MR, and VSM techniques on CoNi/Pt (magnetic data storage) and Co/Cu (sensors and MRAM) multilayers to study their dependence on preparation condition and thermal stability:

Nonlinear Optics for Quantum CommunicationPresently, Quantum Communication is a very hot topic. People are dreaming about quantum computers and teleportation. However, the experimental problems are huge if not insurmountable and quantum cryptography is the only practical application that emerges so far.
