Vibrational Energy Exchange Between Gases and Solids for surface phonon spectroscopy. A by-product of such spectroscopic studies is the direct measurement of the energy exchanges with individual modes of the vibrational spectrum under selected kinematic and temperature conditions.

Monochromatic Phonon Genearation by Superconducting Tunnel Junctions low noise microwave mixers, ultra sensitive magnetic flux detectors (SQUID), and highly repoducible voltage standards. The junctions are also well suited for the generation and the detection of phonons. This will be the subject of the present lecture.

The Gas/Phonon Interface: Desorption and other Phenomenation kinetics, a subject we shall explore in some detail. On a more prosaic level, any scientist who has spent lonely and frustrating hours waiting for an experimental system to reach high vacuum was most likely contending with the kinetics of desorption.
