描述There have been considerable advances in recent times in understanding many common material processes that are of practical importance, such as nonlinear response, fracture, breakdown, earthquakes, packing, and granular flow, that are of immense practical importance. This has been mainly due to new applications of statistical physics, including percolation theory, fractal concepts and self-organized criticality. This collection of articles brings together research in those closely allied fields. It deals with problems in material science involving random geometries and nonlinearity at a mesoscopic scale, where local disorder and nonlinearity influence the global behaviour of cracks, for example, and problems where randomness in time evolution is as crucial as the geometry itself.

Granular flow: Some experimental results,of one grain moving on this surface. The second part of the paper enlights the strong influence of air in the working of hourglasses when the size of the grains (and thus the permeability of the sand) becomes small. The question of stability of arches appears to be a very central one.

Solvable models of material breakdown, the double-exponential failure distribution. Finally, a new analytic recursion method is presented for breakdown of systems with linear cracks, but a continuous distribution of breaking strengths. Remarkably, these systems exhibit an optimum sample size where the failure probability can, at low stress, be . below that of a single bond.

Fracture and other breakdown phenomena in disordered solids,are compared with those available from experiments and from simulations. In absence of comparable simulations and experiments, the breakdown behaviour and instabilities in other cases remain speculative.
