Book 2011This oral history collection brings together extended interviews with fifteen women, illuminating the part that gender roles play in ensnaring women in cycles of domestic abuse and homelessness and highlighting the physical stresses. It also challenges liberal myths about homeless people, and homeless women in particular.

It had been several years since I’d last seen her or spoken with her when I sat down to interview her at her apartment in 1991, where signs posting rules governing the use of the phone provided evidence of Annamarie’s practice of providing shelter to friends who were still on the street.

Mona Caudill Joyner,friend outside of Angeline’s. Both Mona and her friend were staying at the emergency shelter there. We struck up a conversation on the street and then walked down to a nearby sandwich shop, where I conducted the first of my several formal taped interviews with Mona between 2006 and 2008.
