描述The nitrate content of drinking water is rising at an alarming rate in several regions of NATO countries and elsewhere in the world. The increase is due to lack of proper sewage treatment, and primarily to excess fertilizer application. Also, eutrophication in several coastal areas is triggered by high nitrate concentrations. The main purpose of this book is to integrate scientific knowledge related to exposure assessment, health consequences and control of nitrate contamination in water. The motivation is related to the magnitude, the possible adverse health effects, and the high cost of control- ling nitrate contamination. Future research tasks are defined by an interaction among hydro- logists, toxicologists and environmental engineers in an integrated framework for nitrate risk management. The target readership of this book is a mix of university colleagues, practitioners from both the private and public sectors and advanced graduate students working with the hydrological, health science or environmental engineering aspects of nitrate contamination. Principles of Monitoring and Analysisbased on a ground-water solute transport model which requires various hydrogeologic parameters. The information obtained serves as an input to the health risk assessment and relates the monitoring efficiency, the uncertainty in the exposure and the costs to health risk.

Biochemistry of a Plume of Nitrate-Contaminated Ground Waterf an anoxic core surrounded by a halo of nitrate. The groundwater chemistry indicates that nitrification is limited by oxygen diffusion into the anoxic zone and that denitrification is limited by the available labile carbon. Consequently, natural attenuation of the plume is inhibited and . cleanup strategies are suggested.

Nutrient Transport in Two Major Catchments of Turkeyt loads to the Mediterranean Sea and Tuz G?lü were estimated under different hydrological and meteorological conditions. Simultaneous differential equations for transport considered the effects of advection, dilution, dispersion, the biochemical and/or chemical reactions, and interactions between the constituents.

Fertilizer and Water Application, and Control of Nitrate Pollution: Management Issuesess water supply. Existing knowledge of fertilizer application, water management, and agricultural practices can be applied to improve nitrate pollution control, and corresponding best management practices are proposed.

Potential Nitrate Pollution of Ground Water in Limestone Terrain by Poultry Litter, Ozark Region, U.tal Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), it is about ten times that of springs in the forested area. Variations in nitrate concentrations in the ground water are dependent upon the availability of nitrogen and recharge.
