The Planetsstars. Despite their varied appearance to the eye, they have been identified as a group for many centuries. These are the planets. Not all of them are among the planets as we define them today (the Sun and the Moon are no longer considered among their number), but they do comprise the visible members of our solar system.

Getting Acquainted with the Changing SkyOn a clear night, away from the lights and haze of city and suburbs, there seems to be no end of stars. So many are visible that the familiar brighter constellations are almost lost among them. If the Moon is not around, the faint, luminous band of the Milky Way can often be seen arching overhead.

The MoonThe Moon is probably the most gazed-upon object anywhere, on or off the Earth. It is visible from all parts of the Earth; everyone can see it. The Sun is usually too bright to view directly with comfort and safety, and no one planet or star is anywhere near bright enough to attract attention as does the Moon.
