描述Neural computation arises from the capacity of nervoustissue to processinformation and accumulate knowledge in anintelligent manner. Conventional computational machines haveencountered enormous difficulties in duplicatingsuchfunctionalities. This has given rise to the developmentofArtificial Neural Networks where computation is distributedover a great number of local processing elements with a highdegree of connectivityand in which external programming isreplaced with supervised and unsupervised learning.The papers presented in this volume are carefullyreviewedversions of the talks delivered at the InternationalWorkshopon Artificial Neural Networks (IWANN ‘93) organizedby the Universities ofCatalonia and the Spanish OpenUniversity at Madrid and held at Barcelona,Spain, in June1993. The 111 papers are organized in sevensections:biological perspectives, mathematical models, learning,self-organizing networks, neural software,hardwareimplementation, and applications (in five subsections:signalprocessing and pattern recognition, communications,artificial vision,control and robotics, and otherapplications).

The pancreatic B-cell as a voltage-controlled oscillator,e glucose concentration. The effect of increased glucose concentrations is transduced in terms of modulation of frequency of the oscillations rather than in a sustained depolarization. We stress the analogies between this control system and a voltage-controlled oscillator fed by a comparator.

Learning by reinforcement: A psychobiological model,ved phenomena in behaviorist experiments of operant and classical conditioning. The authors propose that an input-output map can be expressed as a combination of these phenomena, in the sense that the task of teaching a function is to make the network to adapt itself to verify a set of phenomena between its inputs and outputs.

A high order neural model,g language running as a multi-elemental processor parallel computer. The system that is finally presented is a higher-ordered neural network with nonsupervised learning implemented in a multilayer structure.

Higher-order networks for the optimization of block designs,is network is then used for the generation of some designs that are known to exist. For some designs the results are good, but for some others the system fails to find an optimal solution in a reasonable time. The problem is shown to be a good example to test the performance of optimizing neural networks.
