Isostatic Extrusion,ist of a cylindrical die with closed end, pressurized by a moving plunger entering the other end (unidirectional single-action pressing). The powder can be either in a sheath or loose in the die. The compaction may also occur at elevated temperature, termed hot pressing, in which case a pressing and sintering operation will occur simultaneously.

The limitations of the press-sintering technique for beryllium were evident, and this, coupled with a consideration of the commercial powder business, led to the development of a new method of beryllium fabrication.

Introduction,During the last twenty years powder metallurgy has progressed in many new directions; new types of products have been manufactured, and new methods of manufacturing have been developed. The fabrication of many of the new products has been possible mainly due to the new fabrication processes.

Magnetic Compaction,The magnetic field produced in a coaxial conductor composed of two tubes carrying high pulsed currents can be used to compact powders of refractory metals and ceramic-metal composites into tubes over 30 in. in length. Densities approaching 100% of theoretical are reached with peak pressures above 50,000 psi.
