描述 | During the last decade we have witnessed a rapid expansion ofour knowledge of the role of the endothelium in the control ofvascular tone and hemostasis. In paricular, developments in molecularbiology have enabled us to understand its physiology in greaterdetail. Furthermore, it is now clear that dysfunction of theendothelium contributes to various cardiovascular diseases. This isespecially true for the coronary vascular bed. Development ofatherosclerosis, disturbed vasomotor tone in stable ischemicsyndromes, and the interaction of thrombocytes with the endothelium inacute ischemic syndrome are all consequences of endotheliumdysfunction. Also, secondary changes in endothelial function have beendescribed, for instance in chronic heart failure. This monographreviews the present knowledge of the role of the endothelium in thecontrol of coronary flow. The authors lead the reader through thistopic starting at the basic physiology of endothelial function and theprinciples of coronary flow regulation. Next, the use of modernclinical techniques to evaluate endothelial function such as positronemission tomography and angioscopy are discussed. Subsequently, several pathophysiological processes |
