描述This volume records the papers presented in Chieti, Italy, at the 1991 meeting of the International Society for Arterial Chemoreception (ISAC). This was the eleventh of a series of assemblies held since 1959. This field of research, which examines the critical function and mechanisms of O and pHIPC0 sensitive cells in 2 2 the body, is unique in that it encompasses diverse biological and medical areas. The reader of this book will note chapters concerning modem techniques like in situ hybridization; analysis of cell membrane channels and intracellular ion movements; immunohistochemistry of peptides, hormones, and the corresponding receptors of chemoreceptor cells; and systemic analysis of reflex pathways involving chemoreceptor cells and their meaning in health and disease. This broad spectrum will appeal to readers interested in the chemoreceptor field, as well as young scientists seeking a scientific field where not only structural analysis but also a sense for functional connections is required. Vascular Analysis of the Carotid Body in the Spontaneously Hypertensive Ratular compartment were studied during postnatal maturation of the control and SHR animals. The vascular compartment was divided into that containing small vessels (diameter 5μm - 12μm) and that containing vessels greater than 12μm in diameter.

Effects of Cell-Free Perfusion and Almitrine Bismesylate on the Ultrastructure of Type-I Cell Mitochposed that mitochondria have an important role in the chemotransduction process. A quantitative analysis was performed to be more precise about the nature of the mitochondrial changes observed during cell-free perfusion of the vascularly-isolated carotid body.

Serotonin (5-Hydroxytryptamine) Expression in Pulmonary Neuroendocrine Cells(NE) and a Netumor Cell nd hence may be a useful in vitro model for studies on pulmonary NE regulation at the cellular and molecular level. Although the amine mechanism is an important feature of normal and neoplastic NE cells, it has not been fully characterized.

The Effects of Almitrine on (3H)5HT and (125I) Endothelin Binding to Central and Peripheral Receptort both 5HT (Kirby and McQueen 1984) and ET (Spyer et al 1991) affect chemoreflex activity in the cat. Here we report the effect of chronic chemoreceptor stimulation, by almitrine bismesylate, on the density of central and peripheral 5HT and ET receptors in the cat.

Light-and Electronmicroscopical Immunohistochemical Investigation of the Innervation of the Human Cantaining sensory fibers in the rat (Czyczyk-Krzeska et al. 1991) but not in the guinea pig (Kummer 1990). Thus, data obtained in laboratory animals cannot be extrapolated to other species like man, and a detailed immunohistochemical study on the innervation of the human carotid body was initiated.
