A Behavioral and Histological Examination of Young Rats Receiving Homotopic Embryonic Neural Transpe anatomical, functional, and physiological nature of the transplants. It has been in the context of this latter domain that the clinical implications of transplantation work have recently received considerable attention. A review of the primary studies carried out in these three general subgroups follows.

Differentiation of Rat Fetal Retina Transplanted to the Occipital Cortex either in Isolation or Togritic arbor of the postsynaptic cell (Cowan 1970). Similarly, axons arising from these cells must be guided to, and form a functional synaptic contact with, their proper targets (other neurons, muscles, etc.), in order for the cell to completely mature or even survive (Sperry 1963, Gaze, 1970, Cowan 1978).

The Motoneuron and Its Microenvironment Responding to Axotomy,so be pointed out that changes occurring during regeneration may also take place in neurons exposed to other noxious stimuli such as hypoxia. An example for this is the increase of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) (Kleihues et al. 1975).

The Role of Neuroglia in Axonal Growth and Regeneration,ents resulting in dense glial scars (fibrous gliosis). Since the classical observations of Cajal, Penfield, and Windle it has been proposed that fibrous gliosis is relevant to the problem of CNS regeneration and that astrocytes exert an inhibitory influence on axonal growth (reviewed by Reier et al. 1983).
