Identification of magnetic minerals and carriers of NRM,gnificance of the NRM and of the rock’s magnetization history. If several magnetic minerals are present, only one of which is carrying a primary NRM, experiments designed to identify the latter should clearly involve the remanent magnetism only and not other properties, e.g. induced magnetization, to which all magnetic minerals present contribute.

Magnetic cleaning techniques,The foregoing field and laboratory tests are at best evidence for secondary NRM acquisition since some geological event or for the presence of low-coercivity material, and the more positive demagnetization (or ‘cleaning’) techniques which detect and remove secondary magnetizations are now a routine part of palaeomagnetic measurements.

Rock magnetism and magnetic minerals,nd magnetic minerals can acquire. Although all minerals possess some magnetic properties, even if only paramagnetic or diamagnetic, the term ‘magnetic minerals’ is used here only for those minerals which are capable of carrying remanent magnetism.
