Isotope techniques,od flow (flow limitated tracers). Other tracers such as .sodium and .technetium (e.g., as pertechnetate) pass more slowly across the capillary membrane (partially diffusion-limited tracers), but they may still be useful at the lower blood flow rates which exist in low tissues (see below).

Noninvasive pressure measurements in arterial disease, around the limb and inflated above systolic pressure; reappearance of flow or a related phenomenon during deflation is detected by a sensor and indicates the systolic pressure value. In the present chapter, the application of this principle to the extremities of patients with arterial disease will be reviewed.

These have defined the physiological and pathological importance of such measurements and reports are beginning to appear of therapeutic manoeuvres, aimed at lowering whole blood viscosity, improving patients with various circulatory diseases. These will be briefly reviewed.

Some little-used and obsolete methods for studying peripheral circulation in patients with occlusivone time been in clinical routine use, only to be superceded by more precise and simpler methods. This paper aims at discussing this topic. No attempt will be made, however, to list all the proposed methods and their variants. That would yield too kaleidoscopic a view and one would easily risk missing some of the variants.
