Conditional Symmetric Instability: A Theory for Rainbands within Extratropical Cyclonesatures are clearly associated with frontal circulations, others occur away from fronts and thus appear to require different theoretical explanations. A number of such theories are here reviewed with particular emphasis on the theory of symmetric instability, and a case study of a band possibly associated with symmetric instability is presented.
