描述.This book explores how a long-term innovation can take place based on historical analyses of the development of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane from the early 1950s to the mid-2010s. The RO membrane is a critical material for desalination that is a key to solve water shortages becoming serious in many places of the world...The authors conducted in-depth field studies as well as analyses of rich archival data to demonstrate how researchers, engineers, managers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers interacted each other for this material innovation to be realized. Toray: Development Aimed at Seawater Desalinatione emergence of an ultra-pure water demand for semiconductor manufacturing provided economically viable markets and enabled Toray to continue its development. We also illustrate that a newly developed membrane, UTC-70, opened the way to the actualization of seawater desalination.

Toyobo: Focused Development in Cellulose Acetate Hollow Fiber Membranesmpanies that developed polyamide-based flat-type membranes, Toyobo adopted cellulose acetate-based hollow-fiber membranes and established a unique position in the Middle Eastern market. We also clarify how its RO membrane business and development were sustained under the extremely difficult business state of the company.

Nitto Denko: Development Under Earnings Pressurees, but also various other membranes for a wide variety of applications. We illustrate that, in the 1980s, the company expanded its business to overseas markets by acquiring Hydranautics. We also depict that Nitto Denko began full-scale business development in the seawater desalination market after overcoming a patent dispute with Dow Chemical.
