描述It has been well recognized that following an ischemicinsult many nervecells of the brain are not killedoutright, but may suffer a "delayed neuronal death" or evenrecover. This led to the concept of "maturation phenomenon"with its main implication that the maturation ofischemiclesions may provide a "window of opportunity" i.e. a periodof time when the injury to neuronal elements is stillreversible, and during which an application of propertherapeutic measures might besuccessful.The symposium on Maturation Phenomenon in CerebralIschemiawas the first international meeting focussed primarily onthis subject and the resulting publication containspresentations and discussionsby prominent researchersengaged in this field. This book should stimulatefurtherresearch on potential of brain tissue for recovery, andparticularly with regard to a functional recovery ofneuronssuffering from chronic ischemic injury.

F. Joó,J. Ikeda,J. Lohr,G. Nagashima,G. Mies,T. S. Nowak Jr.,C. Ruetzler,I. Klatzo of HAP is at the early stage of research. The data discussed in the present study helps other researchers to assess the possible utility of the tools to measure the HAP and enable them to include still more tools in respective domains of HAP for their enhanced assessment.
