Mathematics Education Research as Socially and Culturally SituatedMathematics teachers tend to expect direct and specific prescriptions to solve the problems they experience in their classrooms, whereas researchers tend to address problems raised in research communities that are not always directly related to teachers’ concerns.

Developmental Research as a Research Methodat does not focus on ‘what is’ but that deals more broadly with ‘what ought to be’. This involves, for instance, research that addresses the question of how to constitute education that meets certain pre-given standards or ideals.

On the Generation of Basic Ideas and Individual Images: Normative, Descriptive and Constructive Aspee question arises how to deal with this intuitive level. For instance, does one assume that adequate images develop automatically with an appropriate formal contact with mathematics, or does one consciously follow and support the generation of adequate images and ideas?

Evaluating Research Papers in Mathematics Educationshould be judged. The editors would expect that reviewers (themselves included) would have a good understanding of these criteria and would apply them consistently to research papers submitted to the journal.
