Euler, Delisle and Cartography). Delisle, who played an important role in Euler’s involvement in geography and astronomy, introduced a method for drawing geographical maps which was used in the two atlases published under Euler’s direction. This led Euler to write a memoir in which he worked out the mathematical theory that underlies Delisle’s method.

Lambert’s Work on Geographic Map Projectionsondition with fundamental differential equations and found interesting examples. He also indicated an extension of those differential equations and constructions to maps of a spheroidally shaped Earth. Lambert gave impulses that inspired e.g. Euler and Lagrange to investigate these issues further.

Euler and Maupertuis on the Figure of the Earthsaying on the contrary that the Earth has the form of a spheroid flattened at the poles and elongated at the equator. Our ultimate goal is to show the impact of this question on mathematics, and in particular on the differential geometry of surfaces, first in the work of Euler, and then, in the works of later mathematicians.

On the Construction of Geographical Mapsactor of an angle-preserving geographical map, which allows him to address in precise terms the question of finding maps of least distorsion. He gives a formula for this factor in special cases, in particular for maps which send meridians and parallels to circles or straight lines.
