Passive Components and Power Suppliesnents use the movement of electrons either through a vacuum or through a semiconductor to perform some function in the circuit. Passive devices, on the other hand, do not control the movements of the electrons, but rather allow the electrons to flow through them. It could be argued that the simplest of all passive devices is a length of wire!

Fabrication Techniques and an Introduction to Microelectronicsctor manufacture, or ‘fabrication’ as it is more generally called in the industry, is a highly specialised and very difficult subject, but it is useful for the electronics engineer or technician to have some idea of the principles involved.

Optoelectronicsaced the valve with the transistor, and subsequently complex transistor circuits with integrated circuits, produced an increase in the number and types of devices combining light and electronics. The term ‘optoelectronic’ came into use as a description for what has now become a large and important branch of electronics technology.

Semiconductor and Electromagnetic Devicesevices dealt with here are not covered elsewhere in the book, perhaps because they are outside the mainstream of electronics technology, or perhaps because they are components not generally regarded as ‘electronic’. Nevertheless, this ragbag of items will prove of use and interest to the electronics engineer.
