Rotation and Dynamics of the Milky Way Galaxy,of a star on a photographic plate by letting light shine through it and measuring the intensity of the light that came out on the other side, and compare this with the intensity if there was no star on the plate.

Breaking New Ground,onomical fields. The first was still in the tradition of his great teacher Kapteyn, where it concerned the study Nova Persei 1901, in which apparent expansions were now seen faster than those of light. The second was related to the identification of the Crab Nebula with a supernova from 1054. Both have been discussed in the previous chapter.
