General Considerations about Bone and Soft Tissue TumorsMedical imaging and histopathology are both essential in the study of musculoskeletal neoplasms. The complementarity of both methods has been stressed to the best by R.Freiberger in his article “Thoughts on the Diagnosis of Bone Tumors” (7). Its abstract will serve as an introduction and a guide throughout the material discussed below:

Materials and MethodsDuring a period of 17 months (from 01.01.1987 until 30.05.1988) 275 new cases of bone and soft tissue tumors in the province of Antwerp (1 200000 inhabitants) have been registrated.

EnchondromaEnchondroma is a benign cartilage tumor arising within the medullary cavity and originating from cartilage rests displaced from the physis. Hands and feet are most frequently affected.

PIZZA

OsteochondromaOsteochondroma or osteocartilaginous exostosis is the most common benign tumor of bone. It may be solitary or multiple (hereditary multiple exostoses). The tumor manifests itself during adolescence or childhood. There is no difference in sex incidence. Metaphysis of long tubular bones is the most common localization.
