描述Monoamine oxidase (MAO) is linked to psychiatric and neurological disorders, because inhibitors of the enzyme are used clinically for treatment of affective disorders and Parkinson’s disease. One of the interesting new aspects of MAO is the occurrence in the human population of deletions of genes coding for one or the other enzyme subtype (A or B). This leads to the possibility of a genetic basis for psychiatric disorders based on MAO. Subjects with deletions of type A or B, and combined deletions, have been described. In the first group of 6 papers in this book, the occurrence and characterization of these phenotypes, as well as the structure of MAO genes, is explored. Advances in the biochemistry of MAO subtypes and their physiological function and localization in brain and periphery is included. Other sections of the book deal with the neuroprotective action of MAO inhibitors and their pharmacology, especially the pharmacology of new MAO-B inhibitors.

Modulation of glutamate neurotoxicity in the transformed cell culture by monoamine oxidase inhibitoially 96 h. All these effects were observed in the absence of exogenous monoamines in the culture medium..These results suggest that in transformed cells monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors may influence processes of cell death via MAO-independent mechanisms.

Deamination of methylamine and angiopathy; toxicity of formaldehyde, oxidative stress and relevancedamage vascular systems. Formaldehyde is also capable of exacerbating advanced glycation, and thus increase the complexity of protein cross-linking. Uncontrolled SSAO-mediated deamination may be involved in the acceleration of the clinical complications in diabetes.

Endogenous monoamine oxidase A inhibitory activity (tribulin), measured in saliva, is related to caMAO-AI for an increased sample (n = 18) were associated with higher MAP (but not HR) throughout the experiment (p < 0.05). Those subjects with falling MAO-AI profiles from task to recovery showed significantly greater simultaneous decline in HR than those with a rising MAO-AI profile (p < 0.05).

A cell culture model of cerebral ischemia as a convenient system to screen for neuroprotective drug as in cultures treated with 1nM or 100nM tolcapone; 10μM of tolcapone, on the other hand, resulted in a toxic effect on the cell aggregates. No differences in the release of lactate dehydrogenase into the medium was observed in the aggregates treated with drugs as compared with the control cultures after 2 or 4 days post-ischemia.
