Others instead emphasized the adversarial anddiscretionary nature of legal reasoning, involving reasonableevaluation of alternative choices, and the use of analogicalreasoning. .Recently, however, developments in Artificial Intelligence and Lawhave paved the way for overcoming this separation. Logic has widenedits scope to defensible argumentation, and informal accounts ofanalogy and dialectics have inspired the construction of computerprograms. Thus the prospect is emerging of an integrated logical anddialectical account of legal argument, adding to the understanding oflegal reasoning, and providing a formal basis for computer tools thatassist and mediate legal debates while leaving room for humaninitiative. .This book presents contributions to this development.
