描述Liquid metal MHO is within the scope of two series of international conferences. One is the International Congress on "MHD Power Generation", held every four years, which includes technical and economical aspects as well as scientific questions. The other if the Beer-Sheva Seminar on "MHO Flows and Turbulence", held every three years in Israel. In addition to these well established meetings, an IUTAM Symposium was previously organized in Cambridge (UK) in 1982 on "Metallurgical Applications of MHD" by the late Arthur Shercliff. It was focussed on a very specific subject developing radiply from the middle of the 1970‘s. The magnetic field was generally AC, including frequencies high enough for the skin-depth to be much smaller than the typical length scale of the liquide pool. And the development of new technologies, or the improvement of existing ones, was the main justification of most of the researches presented and discussed. Only two participants from Eastern countries attended this Symposium. By the middle of the 1980‘s we felt that on this very same topic ideas had reached much more maturity than in 1982. Liquid Metal in a Strong Magnetic Fieldeen presented. Attention is paid to the description of experiments where superconducting magnets are used. Preliminary testing of different LM technologies under conditions when a dream about high-temperature superconductivity starts turning into reality is another factor evoking an interest in MHD phenomena in strong fields.

Numerical Solutions of Three-Dimenstional MHD Flows in Strong Non-Uniform Transverse Magnetic Fields in the form of high velocity jets. This paper describes the analysis and summarizes the numerical methods for obtaining 3-D solutions (core solutions) for flow parameters outside these layers, without solving explicitly for the layers themselves.

Dispersion of Small Particles in MHD Flowsdirections of the magnetic field and the deterministic particle velocity. Special emphasis is put on the influence of this deterministic velocity on the dispersion tensor due to crossing trajectory effects.

Experimental Investigation of 3-D MHD Flows at High Hartmann Number and Interaction Parameterhe peak value for N exceeding 10.. Typical results and their comparison to numerical analysis reported in a companion paper are given, as is a brief description of the ALEX facility and the experimental methods employed. Ongoing activities and plans for future experiments are also discussed.

Liquid Metal Flows with Polydispersed Solid and Gaseous Inclusions such particles in the metal fusion flow with regard to its coagulation. The integral characteristics of the flow, including motion velocity, concentration, mass increase of the coagulating particles in time, are defined. Experimental measurements and their comparison with results of the calculation are presented.

Melt Magnetohydrodynamics of Single Crystal Growthntially. The theoretical and experimental results concerning effects due to the electromagnetic fields:suppression and (or) intensification of different kinds of convective flows in the melt, including specific flows caused by thermoelectric phenomena on the phase interface;thickness of the boundary layers, etc. are reported.
