Lipoxins: A New Series of Eicosanoids (Biosynthesis, Stereochemistry, and Biological Activities)display a wide range of actions and appear to be involved in immunity, the regulation of inflammation, and other physiological and pathophysiological processes. In this chapter we describe results of recent studies on the isolation, biosynthesis, stereochemistry and biological activities of this new series of compounds (lipoxins).

Biosynthesis and Biological Activities of Lipoxin A5 and B5 from Eicosapentaenoic Acided by GC/MS analysis. When tested for biological activities, it was found that both lipoxin A. and lipoxin B. induce superoxide anion generation in canine neutrophils. Furthermore, LXA. caused a dose-related contraction of isolated rat tail artery. The biological potency of 5-series lipoxins were similar to those of 4-series.
