Insights Gained from Succession for the Restoration of Landscape Structure and Function,ccession that enhance the rate and quality of restoration. Restoration outcomes are affected by aboveground and belowground processes, but are usually assessed as impacts on aboveground structure and function.We emphasize those processes that can be readily manipulated through a model that features “bottlenecks” to effective restoration.

Retrogressive Succession and Restoration on Old Landscapes, landscapes are known to exhibit natural retrogression; they become leaky, losing nutrients or become less efficient in carbon or water cycling. Consequently, old landscapes can be expected to respond differently to disturbance and restoration activities compared with young landscapes (Walker . 2001).
