描述This volume contains most of the papers presented at the "Workshop on Quasielastic Light Scattering Studies of Fluids and Macromolecular Solutions" held at CISE, Segrate (Milano), Italy, from 11 to 13 May, 1979. Quasielastic light scattering (also called self-beating spectroscopy or intensity correlation spectroscopy) is the technique, introduced by Benedek and coworkers and by Cummins and coworkers about 15 years ago, by which dynamical information about a scattering medium is obtained through the measurement of the power spectrum (or the intensity correlation function) of the laser light scattered from the medium. The technique received in the early seventies a considerable impulse from the development of real-time fast digital correlators. The aim of the Workshop was to bring together a selected number of researchers in order to discuss recent developments in quasielastic light scattering and related optical methods and to report about new applications of the technique in physics, chemistry and biology. Depolarized Light Scattering from Concentrated Particle Suspensionsattering angle and decreases with increasing concentration. The shpae of the total scattering intensity is quite reminiscent of the static structure factor obtained by neutron scattering for simple dense fluids.

Study by Forced Rayleigh Scattering of Thermal Excitations in a Stratified Liquid Layerugh to destabilize the layer. In a first part we shall recall a few theoretical results as a guide line for the experimental studies. These will be described in the second part, making use of the very efficient forced Rayleigh scattering.

Interface Fluctuations of Growing Ice Crystalstensity and line width have been measured as a function of scattering angle and angle of incidence of the laser beam on the interfacial plane. The results indicate that far from equilibrium a phase boundary layer is nucleated. Its thickness is of the order of magnitude of wavelengths of the laser light.

Forced Rayleigh Light Scattering in FluidsParticular emphasis is given on the advantages of selectively inducing a spatially-periodic modulation of the relevant quantity to be measured. However, it will be shown on a particular example that these two light scattering techniques are certainly complementary. Several new developments are also proposed.
