描述Prosthetic replacement of ligaments is a problem which still has not been solved. Despite the development of different synthetic implants and better knowledge of the ligament biomechanics, there is currently no prosthesis that shows satisfactory results. The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of the growing knowledge of natural ligaments and to review, using a biomimetical approach, the different concepts and designs of artificial ligaments developed during the last decades. This approach is undertaken in an effort to better understand why artificial ligaments fail, to redefine design criteria, and stimulate the development of a new generation of more effective replacement devices.

Computer-Assisted Planning of Prosthetic Anterior Cruciate Ligament Insertionber technology (arthroscopy) has been developed to help the surgeon see internal structures hidden beneath the skin and between the femoral condyles. Even with this technology it is difficult to know where and how to properly position the ACL prosthesis replacement [12].

Isometric Reconstruction of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament: Femoral and Tibial Tunnel Placementns have led us to propose a set of rules, the first of which being the respect of isometry. Isometry has two components: “extrinsic” isometry depends on the choice of the femoral and tibial insertions, and “intrinsic” isometry depends on the ligament architecture.

Considerations on the Biomechanics of the Knee Joint with Regard to Ligament Reconstruction, Especias with untreated active patients but also in reconstructions in which the physiological situation is not restored. Biomechanical studies can explain early and later appearing joint damage by relating the different effects. From this we can assess factors which influence the diagnostic and surgical procedures.
