Molecular Adaptation to High Pressure: Membranes,idered, and the effect of high pressure on the fluidity of their type of lipid bilayer was explained. Pressure reduces their fluidity, 50?MPa having an effect equivalent to a 10?°C reduction in temperature. However, there is more to membranes under pressure than this; see Winter and Jeworrek (2009) and Ding et al. (2017).

Adaptation to High Pressure in the Laboratory, organism to a lower pressure can also occur. The formal term for these changes is the plasticity of the phenotype, (Hendry 2016; Ghalambor et al. 2015). How they relate to evolution is not simple, and well beyond the scope of this book.

Effects of High Pressure on the Activity of Ordinary Animals, Including Humans, and on the Functionble membranes, are interesting for at least two reasons. They reveal some aspects of the molecular structure of individual components and they point the way to understanding adaptation to high pressure.

Prokaryotes at High Pressure in the Oceans and Deep Biosphere,fter all, studied by Certes (1884) and subsequently in the early twentieth century by Portier, Benecke, and then by ZoBell, who participated in the Galathea Expedition of 1950–1952, and by Morita.
