Mycoplasmalike organisms as pathogens of coconut palmsgens associated with many of these diseases have been identified and Koch’s Postulates fulfilled. However, for one group of pathogens, the plant mycoplasmalike organisms (MLOs), failure to isolate the pathogens and to study them . has seriously restricted knowledge of them.

Lethal yellowing vector studies. I. Methods of experimental transmissionrally consider this species to be a vector, and no evidence has been published to seriously challenge this concept. Based on general knowledge about insect-vectored plant and animal diseases, the possibility that LY is transmitted by more than one vector is highly plausible. However, thus far, there is no evidence for additional vector species.

Lethal yellowing vector studies. II. Status of , host plant studies. Van Duzee appears to be the major, if not sole, vector of LY in Florida (Howard, this volume). Recently, we have been attempting to manage populations of this insect by management of the ground cover under palms.

Detection and diagnosis of lethal yellowing: conventional methods and molecular techniquesstinguish one MLO from another. DNA-based techniques have recently been developed which enable both sensitive and specific detection of the LY MLO. Use of these new techniques as well as conventional methods for diagnosis of LY are discussed.
