描述This book is an interdisciplinary text exploring the learning and educative potentials of cities and their spaces, including urban and suburban contexts, at all stages of life. Drawing on the insights of researchers from diverse fields, such as education, architecture, history, visual sociology, applied linguistics and sensory studies, this collection of papers develops and demonstrates the connection between experience, in all its dimensions, and informal learning in the city. The chapters discuss various sensory domains of experience, considering visual, embodied, and even sexual dimensions in relation to what and how learning operates, and the contributors reflect on their learning and inquiring experiences in the city, with special reference to topics such as narrativity, ‘race’ and ethnicity, equity, urban literacy, re-generation, participation, representation and oral histories.

Signs of the City: Metropolis Speakingnvolved nearly 300 young participants from Berlin, Barcelona, London and Sofia. Analysis of their participation shows that the city can be an educational tool for youth as well as a remarkable research field for artists and researchers.

Commercial Ethnography: What Are Education Researchers Doing in the Mall?gs’, used drama methods to engage kindergarten children in sharing and talking about objects of personal significance. The second, ‘Children as Citizens’, involved kindergarten children in place-based learning through activities such as excursions, map making and model town making.

Coming to Our Senses: Multiculturalism, Urban Sociology and ‘the Other’ Sensese olfactory sense. Aromatic experiences arouse memories and meanings that unite as well as establish boundaries between social and cultural groups. This chapter presents a fragrant cultural sociology of a London market through the case of Dickson, a stallholder whose aromatic soaps are resonant of sensory histories.

Walking Through Spiritual Neighbourhoods: A Photo Essayographs document and explore the ways in which they drape their own conceptions of the spirit world, or sacred space, over the mundane and profane everyday spaces of the city. I will argue that such actions show us the part that religion and ritual play in learning about urban spaces (Fig. 7.1).
