Identification of Cool Iras Sourcesese objects one would expect to find late AGB objects (Mira variables, carbon stars, OH/IR stars) and also proto- and young planetary nebulae. Objects at the tip of the AGB and planetary nebulae would be expected to be non-variable; the others would be expected to vary.

The Period-Luminosity Relationship for Mira-Like Variables in the LMCer period (>250.) members of the sample are carbon stars..The M-type variables follow the relationship.Ko = (-3.79 ± 0.18) log P (days) + (20.17 ± 0.42) and have an r.m.s. scatter of only 0.13 mag about it.

OH/IR Stars in the Galactic Centrebservatory (NRAO). in New Mexico, USA. The observations have been carried out and the data reduction is now under way at Onsala Space Observatory, Sweden. The 3-σ sensitivity is about 30 mJy and the survey is expected to yield a total number of about 200 OH/IR stars. The main goal is to determine the mass density distribution around the GC.

Mass Loss from Carbon Stars — Observations of the CO Millimeter Wavelength Rotational LinesMore than 100 evolved, mass losing cool giants have been detected in CO rotational line emission with single-dish telescopes. These observations give information about kinematics, mass loss rates and composition for the evolved stars and can be used to study the evolution to planetary nebulae.
