Excimer lasers: current and future applications in industry and medicine, other manufacturing techniques. It is these applications on which we will concentrate. Shown in Table 9.1 are the binding strengths of some of the most common chemical bonds that hold atoms together to form molecules.

Pulsed Nd:YAG lasers in manufacturing applications,ologies are changing too, the optimum choice of equipment changes with time. On balance, the trend is toward the laser. The manufacturing processes considered here are joining (welding, soldering and brazing), cutting, drilling and heat treatment. The most important joining process is welding.

An introduction to lasers,e, Excimer, etc. As an adjective it generally describes the use to which a laser (noun) can be put. Examples here would include materials processing (e.g. welding), ophthalmology, range finding, commun-ications, etc. This chapter introduces the physical ideas involved and some of the concepts and jargon to be encountered in later chapters.

Laser processes are relatively new and are still developing rapidly, one result of which is that there is a lack of appreciation of the procedures and techniques that are available now, and will be available in the future, to ensure the effective use of the processes and the quality of the processed part.
