Choice of Particles and Particle Generationacteristics of particles will not be addressed in this chapter, but is discussed in detail in chapter 4. In any case, the fact that flow tracking demands small particles and light scattering improves with increasing particle size already suggests the necessity for a compromise or possibly an optimization for given flow characteristics.

Introduction temporal resolution and high accuracy. However, also the dominant use of Eulerian descriptions of flow fields, especially in the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), contributed to the attractiveness of a point-wise measuring technique with which statistical moments of the velocity distribution could be obtained.

Light Scattering from Small Particlesole in the basic physics of these measurement techniques. In recognition of this, the following chapter is devoted to the fundamentals of elastic light scattering from small particles. The simplest case of a homogeneous and isotropic sphere is considered.

Processing these primary quantities into secondary quantities directly related to the fluid mechanics of the flow, for instance the mean velocity or spectral distributions of the flow fluctuations, will be referred to as data processing and is addressed in detail in chapters 11 and 12.
