This has occasioned high profile efforts to reform and restructure previously stable health systems. Health organizations are typically complex, labour intensive and unionized. Health reform can have enormous consequences for workers and their unions. Governments‘ ideologies determine the nature of reform initiatives. This book examines the experiences of five jurisdictions - Great Britain, New Zealand, New South Wales, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

This paper explores the Alberta government’s approach to health labour relations restructuring and the implications of its policies for health sector unions and management. In addition to examining structural and operational issues for the parties, it discusses the industrial climate that has emerged.

The Labour Relations of Public Health Care Reform in New South Wales,illion in expenditure, which represents almost one quarter of the state government’s budget, and employs around 100,000 staff, approximately 90 percent of whom work in public hospitals operated by NSW Health.
