描述Kant‘s views about mathematics were controversial in his owntime, and they have inspired or infuriated thinkers ever since. Thoughspecific Kantian doctrines fell into disrepute earlier in thiscentury, the past twenty-five years have seen a surge of interest inand respect for Kant‘s philosophy of mathematics among both Kantscholars and philosophers of mathematics. .The present volume includes the classic papers from the 1960s and1970s which spared this renaissance of interest, together with updatedpostscripts by their authors. It also includes the most importantrecent work on Kant‘s philosophy of mathematics. The essays bring tobear a wealth of detailed Kantian scholarship, together with powerfulnew interpretative tools drawn from modern mathematics, logic andphilosophy. The cumulative effect of this collection upon the readerwill be a deeper understanding of the centrality of mathematics in allaspects of Kant‘s thought and a renewed respect for the power ofKant‘s thinking about mathematics. Singular Terms and Intuitions in Kant’s Epistemologyry really stands or falls on the interpretation of the role of intuition in mathematics” (p. 46). In this paper I want to emphasize Kant’s treatment of empirical judgments and the role that intuition plays in them, as I believe (and will try to show in the course of my discussion) that this context was the primary one for Kant.

Putting these two classes of constraints together, we get a set of constraints on what a Kantian theory of geometry that is also in itself plausible would have to be. It is such a theory that I should like to begin to present in outline form.

Construction, Schematism, and Imaginatione made evident only through such construction. (A 713/B 741). I first sketch an interpretation of Kant’s doctrine, focusing on the construction of arithmetical concepts. I then go on to indicate how an understanding of Kant’s view concerning arithmetical construction can shed light on his views concerning imagination.

Kant’s View of Geometry: A Partial Defenseo accept Kant’s view of geometry in its entirety, I nevertheless shall try to suggest a partial defense of it. My argument will be that those of its theses which have been most vigorously condemned by analytic philosophers are less indefensible than they have usually supposed.
