Reading Romantic Clare three of his contemporaries, Wordsworth, Byron, and Keats, are analysed in this chapter, which is also devoted to reading some of Clare’s most identifiably Romantic poems, and thus preparing key contexts for the rest of the book.

Romantic Spenserianism: Clare, Byron, and Sublime ‘Time’s, formally, tonally, and thematically influenced by Canto IV of Byron’s .. Contrary to existing critical debate, what we see is that Clare was positively influenced by Byron’s poetic example. With ‘The Triumphs of Time’, then, Clare makes a significant contribution to writing about time and the sublime and also to Romantic Spenserianism.

‘As now I gaze’: Forms of Visual Experience in Clare’s Sonnetsto the critical orthodoxy, moreover, Clare’s use of the lyric is experiential as well as denotative and descriptive. Elsewhere Clare is preoccupied with the sublime in the context of the destructive powers of time, but in his sonnets, as this chapter demonstrates, his emphasis is on the survival of ‘old’ things as sublime.
