On the benefits and limitations of dynamic partitioning in parallel computer systems,e performance benefits of dynamic partitioning are heavily dependent upon its associated costs, the system load, and the workload characteristics. We also identify the regions of the design space over which dynamic partitioning performs poorly, quantifying the performance degradation and illustrating forms of unstable thrashing.

Job characteristics of a production parallel scientific workload on the NASA Ames iPSC/860,mission rate and utilization over the weekend were lower than on weekdays. The overall utilization was 50%, after accounting for downtime. About 2/3 of the applications were executed repeatedly, some for a significant number of times.
