The Chosen and the Chastised: Naming Jews in the York Mystery Playsat are both mutually contradictory and inextricably connected. Professedly positive, historical memories as well as allegorical portrayals of the Jew in these plays can also (still) dangerously justify a contemptuous stereotyping of real Jews

Creating Jewish Otherness: The Jew as an Archetype in Fourteenth-Century Philosophical and Theologiclish Dominican, Robert Holcot, as a case study, instructors can illuminate for students how medieval Christian scholars frequently invoked the archetype of the Jew in their argumentation. Further, these insights illustrate how the influence of scholars like Holcot would have spilled over from the academic world into the lay community.

While Chaucer’s tale relates the fictional murder of a Christian boy by Jews, its mirror image—the Latin parody.—presents the real-life scenario of Jews murdered by hysterical Christians in the 1389 Prague pogrom.
