Galactic Structure and Dynamics,t of interstellar extinction became generally accepted. Oort had two major job offers from Harvard and Columbia, but he and his wife decided to stay in the Netherlands. They were to have three children born between 1928 and 1934.

The Last Horizon,ed two major scientific prizes, the Balzan and the Kyoto Prize. His Kyoto lecture in 1987 marked his final synthesis of his scientific work as he took his audience out from the Solar System to the last horizon. He kept up his interest in astronomy until the end. Oort died in 1992.

World War II: The Watershed,th Henk van de Hulst. Oorts interest in the detection of radio waves from space resulted in the latter discussing the radiation mechanisms and the prediction of a detectable spectral line from neural hydrogen.

Rotation of the Galaxy; Marriage,ch resulted in a thesis defended in Groningen in 1926. Oort met his future wife and married her in 1927. A study by Bertil Lindblad sparked the idea of differential Galactic rotation, for which he determined the observational consequences and which he subsequently showed existed in available data.

Professor and Adjunct-Director,un. Oort became General Secretary of the IAU in 1935. At the dedication ceremony of McDonald Observatory he presented a first analysis of the dynamics of the Galaxy NGC3115 and had a successful observing run at Mount Wilson to obtain photographic plates of galaxies for surface photometry.

Opening Up New Avenues,mets and to propose a reservoir that became known as the Oort Cloud. He also pursued the possibilities of radio astronomy, leading to the co-discovery of the 21 cm line van de Hulst had predicted would be observable.

Galactic Structure and the Dwingeloo Telescope, density wave, showed evidence for activity in the nucleus of the Galaxy, and led to the discovery’s of high-velocity clouds. Oort proposed that these showed an inflow of matter into the Galaxy from intergalactic space and provided insights into the problem of galaxy formation.
