描述The last few years have seen a growth in the number of psychology courses which are being offered as single subject or combined studies options in universities, polytechnics and colleges of higher education. More recently, there has been a marked increase in the number of students in schools and colleges of further education taking ‘A‘ level, ‘0‘ level and ‘Ala‘ level psychology examinations. Psychology, too, features much more prominently in professional training schemes, and it is now quite common to encounter the subject in courses for police officers, clergy, teachers, nurses and other paramedical and caring profes- sions. In the past, students had to rely extensively on a diet of psychology texts published in the USA, supplemented by a few modest British contributions, and by a number of specialist books written by scholars reflecting their particular interests. Nowadays, it is possible to point to a significantly larger number of British texts and monographs which deal with major issues in psychology, and a number of general textbooks have been written especially for school and college students preparing for GeE examinations.

Some applications of conditioning,tioning, although there is nowadays a tendency to broaden the behavioural approach to include some apparently successful strategies which have more doubtful connections with such theories and are, in consequence, referred to as ‘behaviour modification’ procedures.

Social perception and attraction, have to rely on various processes in our attempts to form impressions of people, but of course these first impressions are often totally inadequate and not always correct. In these circumstances we need subsequently to modify our opinions in the light of new experiences with these people.

Stress,he researchers who study it. It has been claimed that there are over 300 definitions of stress, but this is not surprising if we accept that it is a situation-specific word. Thus, the word will assume different meanings according to the particular context in which it is used.

Intelligence,ach with its own special meaning according to the particular situation in which it is being used. Intelligence, then, must be regarded as a situation-specific word, but the meaning of the concept will also be related to the viewpoint of the person making the definition.

Physiological psychology,re information about, or respond appropriately to its environment. We rarely think about attending to the physiological functioning underlying behaviour. But there is a complex underpinning by nervous, glandular and genetic events of overt behaviour.
