描述The topic of this years‘ ~osbach Colloquium was DNA integration. We have tried to bring together experts from different fields of research who are studying natural processes by which DNA molecules from differ- ent sources are linked. It has been known for a long time that such linkage occurs between the chromosomes of bacteriophages and plasmids on the one hand and the chromosome of the bacterial host on the other. This process has been especially well studied in bacteriophage A. Since it is controlled in a complicated way, we began with a lecture by M. ptashne on these regulatory processes. H. Nash described the inte- gration of bacteriophage A into the bacterial chromosome. To put this site-specific process into perspective, G. Mosig lectured on genetic recombination in prokaryotes in general and K. Murray described the use of bacteriophage A as an artificial vector for genetic engineering. A different kind of bacteriophage integration is shown by bacteriophage Mu, which is much less specific in its choice of an integration site than A. The properties of this phage were described by P. van de Putte.

Synthesis and Integration of Virus-specific DNA in Cells Infected by RNA Tumor Viruses,arize our progress in deciphering the sequence of molecular events that culminates in the integration of viral DNA into the DNA of avian cells infected by avian sarcoma virus (ASV), and we offer our current view of the mechanisms involved.

Studies on the Cellular Mechanisms of Chemical Oncogenesis,understanding of the fundamental cellular and molecular mechanisms of chemical carcinogenesis, as well as to develop valid in vitro screening tests for the surveillance of the environment. I will address myself to both of these needs.

Evidence for a Complex That Coordinates Different Steps in General Genetic Recombination,chanisms for both kinds of recombination are also similar. To expose differences and possible similarities (if there are any) in these two processes, I want to discuss present knowledge and thoughts about the mechanism of general recombination.

Molecular Biology of Nitrogen Fixation,aryotic organisms, some of which can associate with higher plants to form efficient symbiotic associations. This review, however, will be primarily concerned with the free-living nitrogen-fixing bacterium . since the biochemistry and genetics of nitrogen fixation have been extensively studied in this organism.

Gene Control by the Lambda Phage Repressor, the phage and by the host, and they are discussed in detail by Howard Nash at this colloquium. The essential point to grasp here is that integration and excision do not affect gene functioning in λ. Rather, enzymes which regulate these processes are strictly controlled by regulatory proteins coded by the phage, in particular, the repressor.
