Graded Index Waveguides,e a waveguide operate in a single mode is to reduce the thickness, ., of the guiding film. The smaller dimension of the single-mode guiding layer makes alignment between sources and other guides much more critical than with a large (multimode) structure. Connecting and aligning between multimode waveguides is easier due to the large size.

Rectangular Dielectric Waveguides, already studied are not practical for use on a substrate: the slab waveguide has no lateral confinement, and the circular fiber is not compatible with the planar processing technology being used to make planar structures. The rectangular waveguide is the natural structure.
